James Dalen received his MD from the University of Washington and Master of Public Health from Harvard.

After completing his internal medicine residency at Boston City Hospital and cardiology fellowship at Harvard’s Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, he joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School. He left Harvard to be the first chief of cardiology at the University of Massachusetts, then Chairman of Medicine and Physician- in- Chief and then interim Chancellor.

He then became Dean of Medicine and Vice President for Health Sciences at the University of Arizona. He currently is Professor Emeritus and teaches in the colleges of Medicine and Public Health.

The author has a broad knowledge of health care- and has evaluated the health care systems of other western countries. He lectures on health care systems in the U of Arizona College of Public Health. and has written many articles on Health Care Policy.

He served as Editor of the Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the largest medical journals from 1986 until 2004,and was on the Editorial board of the Journal of the American Medical Association from 1986 until 2004.

He has held leadership positions in the American College of Physicians, American College of Cardiology and the American College of Chest Physicians where he was President in 1986-1987.

His career has been spent in three university hospitals: the Peter Bent Brigham in Boston, The University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Mass. and at the Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Arizona.

He was one of the first medical school deans to support the emerging field of Integrastive Medicine and was one of the founders of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, which now is supported by more than forty medical schools in the US and Canada.He is the Executive Director of the Weil Foundation, a non-profit foundation that supports education in Intergrative Medicine.
